porchってなに？

FAHRENHEIT 451 の原著を読み始めたら、

冒頭でこういう文があった。

"He wanted above all, like the old joke, to shove a marshmallow on a stick in the furnace, while the flapping pigeon-winged books died on the porch and lawn of the house" 

物語の世界観を理解する上では重要な文だが、その文意とは別に、"porchってなんだ？”という疑問を持った。

Longman Dictionary of Contemporary Englishで調べてみると、次のようにある。

"1 BrE an entrance covered by a roof outside the front door of a house or church

  2 AmE a structure built onto the front or back entrance of a house, with a floor and a roof but no walls"

なるほど、つまり玄関の庇がついているところを指しているようだ。

英単語ってより身近な単語から順に学んできたという印象だったが、”とても身近な単語”という範囲に関してはむしろ知らないもののほうが多いのかもしれない。

ちなみに日本語でも”玄関ポーチ”というらしい。知らなかった。
